Step-by-step instructions for recording tools, reviewing both collections, and keeping backups.
Sign in and save your collection
- On My Toolbox, select Sign in if you already have a Split Ferrule member account. Enter your email and password.
- For a new account, select Create account, enter your email and password, and add your first and last name if you wish.
- If prompted, enter the email verification code or wait for account approval, as the screen instructs.
- The Import toolbox information already saved on this device option is for your own earlier device records. Back up older records before signing in. Existing account records load first; this option does not merge them with an existing saved collection.
You do not need a ChatGPT account. Your toolbox records are saved to your Split Ferrule member account after changes. Use an internet connection, and resolve any saving error before leaving. On another device, sign in to the same account to load the saved collection. Refresh or reopen the toolbox to load changes from another device; avoid editing the same collection on several devices at once.
Use Sign out in the toolbox header when finished on a shared device. Keep CSV backups as separate reference copies. For account-access problems, use Suggestions & bug reports; never email a password.
1. Quick start
- Open Sheffield Toolbox or Swiss Toolbox for the tool you are recording. Both are available together; switch between them whenever you need.
- Find the chart for your tool's form, then locate its sweep or profile and width.
- Select the matching open cell to record the tool as owned.
- Select the owned cell again to open Tool information and add its maker and notes.
- Check your inventory list, then use Export inventory to keep a separate copy.
You can record tools bought anywhere. The charts describe tool profiles; they do not show current store availability.
2. Use both Sheffield and Swiss toolboxes
You can use the Sheffield Toolbox and Swiss Toolbox alongside each other. Both are available at once, so you do not have to choose one or the other. Simply flip between the toolboxes whenever you need.
| Toolbox | Use it for | Charts |
|---|---|---|
| Sheffield | Sheffield sweep numbering, with widths in inches. | Straight, Long Bent, Short Bent, Back Bent. |
| Swiss | Pfeil profile codes, with widths in millimetres. | Straight, Long Bent, Short Bent, Back Bent, Fishtail, Specialty. |
For each tool, open the toolbox that matches its numbering system and record its actual maker in the individual tool details. Switch to the other toolbox whenever you need to record or review tools in that system.
The Swiss charts cover the full-size carving-tool catalogue family. Medium, palm, linoleum, and heavy-duty ranges are separate families.
3. Read the charts
First select the blade form. Then find the sweep or profile row and the width column. Their intersection is the tool's chart position.
| Item | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Form | The blade shape along its length, such as straight, long bent, short bent, or back bent. |
| Sweep or profile | The cutting profile within the selected numbering system. V-tools also require the correct V-angle. |
| Width | The cutting-edge width, using the units shown in the selected toolbox. |
| Open selectable cell | A chart position with no owned tool recorded. |
| Owned highlight | At least one recorded tool in that position. Select it to see the individual records. |
| Counter of 2 or more | Multiple individual tools saved at the same position. |
| Blank Swiss position | A profile/width combination not listed in that catalogue chart. |
Keep the complete Pfeil profile code, including letters such as 7L or 12a. Those letters are part of the identification.
A short bent tool remains mostly straight before curving near the cutting end. The Toolbox uses “short bent” consistently.
If you cannot identify a tool confidently, keep its measurements and identification notes separately until you can place it correctly.
4. Add a tool from a chart
- Open the appropriate toolbox and form chart.
- Check the sweep or complete profile code and the width.
- Select the matching open cell to mark the tool owned.
- Confirm that the cell now shows the owned highlight.
- Select it again to open Tool information and record the maker and notes.
If the position is already owned, open it and follow Record multiples to add a separate tool.
5. Add maker information and notes
- Select an owned chart cell to open Tool information.
- If it contains several tools, use the numbered pages to select the individual tool.
- Enter the maker and any useful identifying notes, then select Save changes.
- Check the record again after editing to confirm the details were retained.
Useful notes include a handle description, ownership mark, condition detail, or a provisional identification. For example: “Marples; boxwood handle; initials on handle.” This is an example, not a prefilled record.
Use Save changes to keep edits or Cancel to close without saving those edits. Save before switching to another numbered record. Keep uncertain information labelled as uncertain. Changing the maker does not create a new chart profile.
6. Record more than one matching tool
- Open the owned cell for the shared form, profile, and width.
- Use the + inside Tool information to add another tool at that position.
- Give the new tool its own maker and notes, then select Add tool.
- Use the numbered pages to move between the individual tools.
- Check the cell counter. It appears when two or more tools share that position.
Record two physical tools as two entries, even if their specifications and makers are identical. Different makers can also share a chart position.
7. Edit or remove an individual tool
Edit maker information or notes
- Open the owned cell.
- Select the correct numbered tool record.
- Update its maker or notes, select Save changes, and check the saved result.
Remove a tool you no longer own
- Open the cell and select the specific individual tool.
- Check its maker and notes so you remove the intended record.
- Select Remove tool. You can also use Remove beside an individual entry in the inventory list.
- Review the remaining records and chart indicator.
Removing one tool leaves the other records at that position intact. Removal takes effect immediately; check the intended record before selecting it.
8. Browse your inventory and use filters
- Open the inventory list for the selected toolbox. Sheffield entries are grouped by sweep.
- Use Tool form to narrow the list to a particular form.
- Use Sweep number in Sheffield or Pfeil profile in Swiss to narrow it further.
- To broaden the results, reset the form to All forms and the profile selection to View all.
Filters help you review a collection without changing the recorded tools. If an entry appears missing, check both filters before adding it again.
The header’s tools saved total combines Sheffield and Swiss. Each inventory list shows matching tools of total tools for that toolbox. Each chart reports tools owned and the number of occupied profiles.
The chart counter identifies multiple tools at one position. Do not treat the number of highlighted positions as the number of physical tools in your collection.
9. Review missing profiles
- Choose the toolbox and chart you want to review.
- Compare the owned highlights with the remaining selectable positions.
- In Sheffield, View missing profiles scrolls to the charts. Compare the open selectable cells with the owned highlights. In Swiss, scroll down to its charts.
This is a chart view, not a filter that hides owned cells. “Missing” means no tool is recorded at that position. It does not mean the tool is in stock, that you need one, or that you must complete the whole chart.
10. Import tools using a CSV form
Prepare the file
- Export your existing inventory before importing.
- In the target toolbox, select Download Form.
- Open that form in a spreadsheet application and keep its column headings.
- Enter one tool per row using the form’s units and profile system. The importer skips profiles already recorded, even if the maker differs. To record additional tools with the same profile, use the + in Tool information.
- Save or export the completed file as CSV.
| Form | Required information |
|---|---|
| Sheffield | Width, sweep or V-angle, and form or bend. Follow the downloaded form's exact headings and accepted formats. |
| Swiss | Pfeil Profile and Width (mm). Preserve the complete profile code. |
Fill the maker and notes where the form provides those columns. Leave unknown details blank rather than guessing. Keep fractional widths and profile codes from being changed into dates or other values by the spreadsheet application.
Upload and check the result
- Return to the same toolbox and select Upload Completed Form.
- Choose your CSV and review any validation messages shown.
- Check representative chart positions, individual records, makers, notes, and multiples against your source rows.
- Export the resulting inventory after checking it.
11. Export your inventory and keep a backup
- Choose the toolbox whose records you want to export.
- Reset list filters to All forms and View all so you can review the complete inventory.
- Select Export inventory and keep the downloaded CSV.
- Open the file and check that it includes the tools and details you intended to keep.
- If you use both Sheffield and Swiss, repeat the export in the other toolbox and check that both collections are covered.
Give backup files clear names, such as Sheffield-Toolbox-YYYY-MM-DD.csv and Swiss-Toolbox-YYYY-MM-DD.csv.
Keep a backup after substantial changes and before bulk imports, clearing browser data, or changing devices. Preserve the original file while checking any transfer or restoration.
Each export contains all records in that toolbox, including multiples, maker, and notes, regardless of list filters. Sheffield and Swiss export separately. Keep exports as full reference copies: reimporting a CSV skips matching profiles and will not fully restore multiples or update existing records.
12. Use the Toolbox on a phone or tablet
- Choose the toolbox and chart you need.
- Scroll the page vertically to move between charts and the inventory list.
- Swipe sideways within a chart to reach widths outside the screen.
- Check the profile row and width heading, then tap the matching cell.
- Use the individual record pages when several tools occupy the same position.
If your browser asks where to save an exported CSV, choose a location you can find again. Use the browser's download list or your device's file app to open it later.
13. Troubleshooting
I cannot see the width I need
Scroll the chart sideways. Check the selected form and whether you are using Sheffield inches or Swiss millimetres. A blank Swiss position is not a listed catalogue combination in that chart.
I added a tool but cannot find it in the list
Check the selected toolbox, reset the form and profile filters, then inspect the chart cell. If the cell contains several tools, review its numbered records before adding another entry.
The count is higher than expected
Open positions showing multiple-tool counters and compare the individual records with the physical tools. If you recently imported, review those entries before uploading again. Back up before removing unintended entries.
My CSV is rejected or entries are missing
Check that it is a CSV, that it uses the correct toolbox form, and that the headings and required fields are intact. Check the units, full Pfeil codes, V-angles where applicable, and spreadsheet changes to fractional widths. Follow any specific validation message.
My collection appears empty
Check that you signed in to the same Split Ferrule member account, then check the toolbox and filters. Reopen the toolbox with an internet connection to load the account’s saved records. Keep any exported backups. Do not repeatedly import files while the cause is uncertain.
I need to report a problem
Select Suggestions & bug reports to open an email draft. Include the toolbox, form, profile, width, what you expected, and what happened. Include your device and browser and a screenshot if useful. Review and send the email in your mail app; selecting the link alone does not submit a report. Never include a password.
