Answers to common questions about your collection, charts, and member account. For step-by-step instructions, see How to use your Toolbox.
Getting started
What is The Split Ferrule Toolbox?
The Toolbox is a visual record of your carving-tool collection. Use it to see which profiles and widths you own, record individual tools, and spot gaps in your collection.
Can I add tools I bought elsewhere?
Yes. You can record tools you already own, regardless of where you bought them. Add the maker and any useful details to each tool's record.
Which toolbox should I use?
Both toolboxes are available together. Simply flip between Sheffield Toolbox and Swiss Toolbox whenever you need. Use Sheffield for its sweep numbering and inch widths, and Swiss for Pfeil’s complete profile codes and millimetre widths. Record the actual maker separately.
What does each chart cell represent?
A cell represents a particular combination of tool form, sweep or profile, and width. Marking it owned records a tool in that position. Multiple tools can share the same position.
Understanding the charts
What is the difference between sweep, width, and form?
Sweep describes the cutting-edge curvature of a gouge. Width describes the size of its cutting edge. Form describes the shape of the blade along its length, such as straight, long bent, short bent, or back bent. V-tools also need their V-angle identified.
Are Sheffield and Pfeil sweep numbers interchangeable?
No. Treat them as separate numbering systems. A matching number alone does not establish that two tools have the same cutting profile. Compare the actual profile, width, and form before treating tools from different systems as equivalents.
Which charts are included?
The Sheffield toolbox has Straight, Long Bent, Short Bent, and Back Bent charts. The Swiss toolbox has Straight, Long Bent, Short Bent, Back Bent, Fishtail, and Specialty charts.
How should I enter a Pfeil profile code?
Keep the complete code, including its letters, and use width in millimetres. For example, use 7L or 12a as identified for the tool. Do not discard the letters or convert the profile number into a Sheffield number.
What does “short bent” mean here?
A short bent tool remains largely straight before curving near the cutting end. The Toolbox uses “short bent” consistently; some makers and sellers use “spoon” for this form.
Why are some Swiss chart positions blank?
The Swiss charts follow the listed Pfeil catalogue combinations. A blank position is not a listed size in that chart. A selectable position describes a tool profile; it does not indicate that The Split Ferrule currently has that tool for sale.
Do the Swiss charts cover every Pfeil range?
The Swiss reference charts cover full-size carving tools. Medium, palm, linoleum, and heavy-duty tools are separate catalogue families; do not assume that every tool in those ranges has a matching position here.
What if I cannot identify a tool's sweep or find an exact match?
Check the maker's markings, width, and blade form before choosing a position. Do not force an uncertain tool into a nearby profile just to include it. Keep its measurements and identification notes separately until you can establish the correct match.
Managing your tools
How do I add a tool?
Select the matching chart cell to mark the tool owned. You can also use the downloadable inventory form to enter tools in a CSV file and upload the completed form.
Can I record more than one tool with the same profile and width?
Yes. Open the owned cell and use the + in Tool information. Enter the new tool’s maker and notes, then select Add tool. A counter appears for two or more tools; numbered pages open the individual records.
How do I edit or remove one tool?
Select its owned cell to open Tool information. If several tools share the position, use the numbered pages to select one. Choose Save changes to keep edits, Cancel to discard unsaved edits, or Remove tool to remove that individual record. Removal takes effect immediately.
Does recording another maker create a different chart profile?
No. Chart positions are organised by form, profile, and width. Two tools with those same specifications share a position even when their makers differ. Their individual records let you keep the maker and notes separate.
How can I review my collection or find gaps?
Use the inventory list’s form and profile filters. The chart highlights positions you own. In Sheffield, View missing profiles scrolls to the charts; it does not hide owned cells. In Swiss, scroll down to its charts. An open selectable cell means no matching tool is recorded, not that you need to buy one.
Can I import or export my inventory?
Yes. Use the matching Download Form, then Upload Completed Form. Imports add new profiles and skip matching profiles regardless of maker or notes. Add extra tools at a matching position with the chart’s +. Export inventory downloads all records in the selected toolbox, including multiples, maker, and notes. Export Sheffield and Swiss separately. CSV reimport does not fully restore multiples or update existing records.
How do I use the charts on a phone?
Scroll each chart sideways to reach widths beyond the screen. Tap the appropriate cell to add a tool or open an existing record.
Accounts, saving, and support
Do I need a ChatGPT account?
No. Sign in with a Split Ferrule member account or select Create account on My Toolbox. Follow any email-verification or approval instructions shown.
Where is my inventory saved?
Your records are saved to your Split Ferrule member account after changes. Use an internet connection, resolve any saving error before leaving, and keep CSV backups as separate reference copies.
Can I open my collection on another device?
Yes. Sign in to the same Split Ferrule member account to load your saved collection. Refresh or reopen the toolbox to load changes from another device. Avoid editing the same collection on several devices at once.
How do I suggest a feature or report a problem?
Select Suggestions & bug reports to open an email draft. Describe the chart, profile and width, what you expected, and what happened. Add device/browser details and a screenshot if useful. Review and send the email in your mail app. Never include a password.
